As part of the CONTACT Photography Festival, Blouin Division is pleased to present Uprooting a Flower, an exhibition of new works by Ernesto Cabral de Luna in the Project Space.

"A kid who once knelt to play with his toys at his abuela’s house, was also taught to kneel to pray. Inside a church, the stained windows stand tall, illuminating those who lack the knowledge to discern words and present an image to be digested as holy, almighty. The coloured glass shows, to fresh eyes, a miracle - divine light. The artist is capable of discerning imagery from his past, and to venerate that which he has been away from since the very first year that his body had to adapt to the sensation of an ice burn rather than that of the kiss of the sun. In this evolution of his work, Ernesto reconstructs the image as a whole, producing forms that recall the language of stained glass - familiar, devotional, and refracted.

Cabral de Luna has made of memory a divinity. Drawing from symbols of his upbringing, he constructs a system of display that illuminates what is sacred to him. Divinity for Ernesto is not only found inside a house of worship, it is also in the hands of the women who peel the chiles, Xochimilco, and in the touch of two masked bodies. His archival image transfers onto glass show, to fresh eyes, a miracle – divine light."
